文部科学大臣表彰 若手科学者賞 / the MEXT Young Scientists’ Prize

　文部科学大臣表彰 若手科学者賞をいただきに、文部科学省に行ってきました。多分、生まれて初めて文部科学省（というか何かしらの省庁）に行きました。また、大臣という肩書きを持つ方に、遠くからとはいえ初めて生でお目にかかりました。ありがとうございました。

　今まで私の友人、知人で受賞されている方々を多く存じ上げており、みなさんとても優秀です。自分も受賞できて幸運でした。運だけは割とある方な気がします。当日も同じく受賞された数名の知り合いと会ってお話しすることができました。私の出身の現定量研／旧分生研関係者が、私を含めて少なくとも５人いたと思いますので、良くも悪くも活性の高い研究組織だったような気がします（現定量研は良い意味でのみ活性が高いはず）。 　仕組みが今ひとつ分かっていないのですが、何かしらの組織が推薦して、そこから選ばれる賞のはずです。私の推薦組織は東京都ですので、都民のみなさんと小池都知事に感謝いたします。自分の書類の推薦者欄に都知事の名前を見たときには仰天しました。その書類の準備もなかなかに大変でして、受賞につながって報われました。ときどき困るので、ここにもメモとして書き残しておくと、大学院を修了したのは3月23日でした。普段は「3月」までしか書かないで済むのですが、たまに日まで聞かれます。

　基本的には留学先の研究内容で受賞したので、ポスドク時代の恩師であるDr. Bruce ConklinとConklin Labの同僚、そして帰国してからの研究の継続を支えてくださっている医学研と研究室のみなさんに感謝いたします。帰国してから医学研で始めた研究も、評価される良いものになるように努力します（そうでないとこの先やっていけないですし）。また、文部科学省には今後とも特に科研費などで是非お世話になりたいと願っております。

I visited the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan in Tokyo for the award ceremony of the MEXT Young Scientists' Prize. This was my first visit to the MEXT (or any kind of ministries). Also, I saw a minister for the first time in my life, although he was far away from me. I appreciate this opportunity.

I know many scientists who have been awarded the same Prize. They are all fantastic scientists, so it is fortunate that I am selected too. I am lucky. At the ceremony, I met and talked to a few friends who also won the Prize. There were at least five people from the current IQB/former IMCB at the U Tokyo, including me, so I think the activity of that Institute has been very high in a good way as well as in a bad way (should be only in a good way now). I do not know exactly how the selection process works, but apparently some organizations nominate candidates, and the MEXT selects the awardees. Tokyo, as an organization, nominated me for this Prize, so I thank the Tokyo citizens and the Governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike. I was very surprised to see her name in my nomination documents. Preparing these documents took a lot of effort, so I am glad that it has been rewarded. For example, they asked when I got my PhD. It was "March 23rd". Usually, just "March" works, but sometimes people ask the date. Good to remember. The Prize was basically for what I did as a postdoc. Therefore, I thank my postdoc mentor, Dr. Bruce Conklin and my colleagues in his lab. I also thank my lab members and people at the current Institute for supporting my research. I have several projects that I started in my own lab, so I will do my best to make them good too (I cannot survive otherwise). Moreover, I hope I will be in the MEXT's care a lot again in the future, for their grants.
